ToggleFirst Impressions
When I got my first look at the Frogg Toggs Hellbenders, I was immediately impressed. These mid-range stockingfoot chest waders look high-quality, hardwearing, and durable. From what I could tell, they were well made and seemed like they would perform well and last for a long time. That’s a great deal when they retail for around $150. They also look cool, with a slim fit that’s practical and flattering. Now, let’s dig in a bit deeper into our review and explore the features of these chest waders for fly fishing.
Buyer’s Guide
Construction
The material of the fishing waders is critical because it needs to be breathable but also strong. You don’t want to snag or tear your waders on the undergrowth, or you’ll end up with inevitable leaks and wet clothes. But at the same time, your waders should let air circulate and wick sweat away.
The Frogg Toggs Hellbender is made from a 4-ply nylon upper, using the latest technology to ensure the best breathability and air circulation. It’s also 100% waterproof, so you should stay dry all day out on the water. Breathable nylon waders are much preferable to neoprene unless you’re wading in very cold water.
These stockingfoot chest waders have high-quality seams that can stand up to the test. I think that they should last at least 3 years if you take care of them. There do seem to be more seams than necessary in this product design. That does increase the risk of developing a leak somewhere – but so far, they are doing a great job of keeping me dry.
Reviews from other anglers suggest that the seams may be an issue, making the Frogg Toggs Hellbender less hardwearing than other premium waders. If you want your waders to last as long as possible, check out Frogg Toggs’ wader care tips [1].
The shin and knee section is the area that comes under the heaviest wear and tear from rocks and undergrowth. That’s why I love the fact that Frogg Toggs have reinforced this area with 5 layers, making them super durable. These waders are finished off with strong but flexible neoprene booties, measuring 3.5mm. You can wear them with or without socks, and they adapt to the shape and size of your feet for ultimate comfort.
Sizing
Another great thing about the Frogg Toggs waders is that they come in a wide range of sizes., You can choose from 9 different options to get your ideal fit. The waders seem true to size despite the slim fit, but you can check the sizing chart on the Frogg Toggs website [2] to make sure you buy the right waders for you!
The Frogg Toggs Hellbenders fit snugly, yet allow you plenty of freedom of movement. You won’t feel restricted, whether you’re hiking, wading, or casting.
Extra Features
The Hellbenders from Frogg Toggs are packed with lots of useful features. First up is the handy 3-way zippered chest pocket. It’s so convenient to keep small but essential items close at hand, and the zippers make sure that you won’t drop anything into the water. There’s one zippered chest pocket on top and one on each side, which you can use to store extra tools or to keep your hands warm on cold days.
You’ll also find an internal security pocket on the inside of the waders for storing important things like your keys. The multifunction chest pocket is a fantastic addition, removing the need to double up with a chest vest or pack.
Gravel guards are included with the Toggs Hellbenders, an excellent addition that you don’t often see in waders of this price. If you wear stocking foot waders, gravel guards are critical to keep sand, grit, and stones out of your wader boots. We love that you don’t have to shell out extra for a separate pair.
The Hellbender is also kitted out with a wading belt and adjustable suspenders. These features ensure that you can get a great custom fit for your optimal comfort. You can adjust the shoulder straps to make sure your waders stay on securely, without digging in. It’s also easy to take them off, thanks to the quick-release button.
Whatever type of waders you prefer to use, Frogg Toggs can provide. You’ll find everything from stocking foot waders with neoprene booties to bootfoot waders. You can select the best waders to suit your needs and fishing style.
Performance in the Water
This factor is what it all comes down to when choosing waders: How will they perform in the water? The Hellbenders impressed, as they are so flexible and lightweight. They allow full freedom of movement in the water, yet they are fully waterproof. You’ll have no problem casting, and the suspenders ensure that the waders stay firmly in place, no matter how active you are. The material and seams hold up well against frequent use, so you’ll stay dry all day.
However, I would take care when walking through dense undergrowth. Some anglers have found that the seams can split quite easily or that branches can snag the material, causing holes and leaks. If this does happen, it’s possible to fix them up. But if you can take care in the first place, these waders should serve you well and keep you dry when out fishing!
Warranty & Customer Service
Frogg Toggs are known for their excellent, friendly customer service. They want their customers to feel satisfied with their products, and so they offer a limited one-year warranty. If your product is defective, they should replace it free of charge. However, you should know that the warranty doesn’t cover accidental damage from fish hooks, undergrowth, or tree branches.
